so where are the patriocentrists?
The last few days I have been amazed at the number of blogs and websites that have talked about the death of little Lydia Schatz. Thankfully, those who are coming forward are having a renewed sense of outrage and are willing to say this behavior is wrong and to call out the Pearls etc. for their responsibility, even in the face of adversity. I would like to ask you to please pray for Laurie and her family who are seeking to minister to this family whom they know better than the rest of us do. My heart goes out to her own loss in this situation as well as the pain of not being able to minister to the children, two of them once again becoming orphans. I would also like to ask you to pray for those who are so committed to these abusive systems that their eyes are blinded to the horror of the situation. I have been a little more than stunned to hear people talk about the “lovely families” who employ the Pearl methods or the “blessing” various homeschooling leaders have been to them without expressing their grief over the death of this little child.
And one more observation I would like to make. Where are those homeschooling leaders and those within the patriocentric movement? Please correct me if I am wrong, but I have repeatedly visited their blogs and website over the last week to see if someone, anyone, will comes forward to speak out against the Pearl or Fugate teachings. I have yet to see ONE SINGLE ARTICLE or comment about this travesty. Oh, I have seen pictures of orphans in Haiti, which is commendable, and have read of the outrage and horror of a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition magazine on the shelves at Wal-Mart. But where are the heart cries for this child and for others who are experiencing the same sort of treatment in their homes? Once again, this is a situation where the homeschooling community must police itself for the sake of the very children we say we love.

Join me on an adventure as we study through Chuck Swindoll’s book The Grace Awakening. Each Monday I will post some thoughts from a portion of the book and we will discuss them in the comment section, making special application for moms. (Dads and singles are welcome to join us, too!) You can purchase a copy of the book (there are lots of used copies available via Amazon) or it is also available on audio. I don’t want you to feel like you have to read along to join in the discussion; I want this to be as stress free as possible. But I know you will enjoy the book if you read it……understanding and embracing grace is life changing and many have found this book to be a great encouragement after coming through paradigm based ministries, including some homeschooling groups. Please invite your friends, I know you will be blessed!!! We will be starting on July 23rd!

1.We must acknowledge that we are all sinners. “For we are all become as one that is unclean, and all our righteousnesses are as a polluted garment: and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. (Isaiah 64:6) and “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
2.We are all accountable for our own sins before God. “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.” (2 Corinthians 5:10)
3.There is only one way to be forgiven of these sins and that is through the blood of Jesus Christ. “Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
4.If we confess our sin to the Lord and repent of it (not allow it to rule in our lives) we can be forgiven and be in right standing with God. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousenss.” (1 John 1:9)
5.Genuine salvation will result in living lives of good works but none of those works contribute in any way to our standing before God which is based solely and completely on the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. “But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God. (Hebrews 10:12) and “Not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to His mercy He saved us by the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Spirit. (Titus 3:5) and “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8)
6.We all, men and women, boys and girls, have direct access to the throne of grace because everyone who is a born-again believer in Jesus Christ is called a “priest and king” in God’s economy. “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” (I Peter 2:9)
I believe that many of the false teachings within the patriocentric movement are in direct contrast to these Scriptures and I would encourage each of us to first examine what we believe about Jesus and His work on the cross, its implications and its marvelous power.
Secondly, I would challenge anyone reading here to examine your own heart and ask yourself whether you have been trusting in good works….baptism, homeschooling, church attendance, modest dress, the list goes on and on, or if you have placed ALL your faith and hope in Jesus’ blood and righteousness alone.
And finally, I would challenge you to examine the teachings within your own church system, whether it is Protestant, Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, etc. Ask yourself what your church teaches about ecclesiastical authority and family authority. Does it line up with the Word of God? It is a top down system that requires certain works in exchange for a relationship with Jesus Christ or do you have the assurance that you are saved for eternity by His death on the cross in your stead? Does it teach that the fruits of the spirit and obedience to all the one anothers is what our lives will demonstrate or is there a list of man made rules?
If you desire to talk with me about this, please send me a note to shesthatmom@gmail.com. My desire is that no one who visits this website will leave without knowing the glorious truth that we can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and can enjoy a life filled with His goodness and grace!

Thank you for your prayers. I’m much to small to manage this on my own, or at all really. But perhaps the small things each of us can do can add up to a lot – if we will each trust God and with the courage He gives us stand up for what really matters: the Gospel of the grace of God to disobedient and undeserving sinners.
The only hope we really have in dealing with the Pearl method is to make the world a place where no one will buy their books or listen to what they have to say any more. The only hope we have to accomplish such a thing is to return the Gospel of grace to the center-most place in the life of the church.
And I have asked elsewhere what you’ve asked above: “Where are the men?” This is not a mommy problem. The Pearl followers are male headed families. Nothing will change until the men are convinced, and they WILL NOT learn from women. Perhaps we should pray for God to raise up men willing to stand up for grace for the sake of children.

Laurie, you have really expressed two of the goals of this blog. Grace must be at the center of all we are and do within the body of Christ. If we really believe in a sovereign God who imparts that grace to us and expects us to freely give it to others as well, we MUST speak out against those paradigm peddlars and list-makers who may speak of grace but who do not understand it! Our family continues to pray for yours, Laurie, and please let us know of anything we can do.
Karen, I’m thinking an “Open Letter to Home Education Leaders” would be in order. Someone could write a letter calling for all home schooling leaders to firmly address this issue of child abuse with everyone in their sphere of influence. Someone else could be in charge of gathering “contact” e-mail addresses from home schooling web sites. The letter would call for leaders to endorse the statement as a way of influencing others to join the cause. It would be worded broadly enough so as not to exclude those who use a reasonable amount of corporal discipline. What do you think? ~~ Virginia http://www.ComeWearyMoms.blogspot.com.
Where are they?
Circling their wagons against the “enemy” CPS- that’s a gov’t agency you know… *sighs*
Expect to see a repeat of their reaction to the State of Texas during the FLDS debacle. Don’t you know that “parental rights” ALWAYS trump “states rights”??! It’s ALL about the parents… isn’t that what the Ezzos and Pearls teach??! And dare I say, even James Dobson and Elizabeth Elliott?
What? Jesus came NOT to be served, but to SERVE and GIVE His life as a ransom for many? And He actually said, “Let the children come to me and do NOT hinder them? That’s in the Bible? REally? Oh, NOT in Numbers 30 or Proverbs 13:24… You mean, there is other counsel in the Bible outside of Numbers and Proverbs?
I’m pretty sure the Pearl’s distanced themselves from the Patriocentrists a couple years back. That could be why they don’t feel a need to say anything: the Pearls aren’t “one of them” anymore…
Just a thought.
~Luke
Virginia, links to my thoughts and links on this subject were posted on two homeschooling sites. On one, a mom talked about how blessed she had been by one of these teachers without mentioning a single word about the horror of this child’s murder. The other one, which is a large group, had only one comment. At all. I don’t get it. Are we so afraid to be critical of someone’s choices in raising their children that we don’t say anything? Thankfully, some individuals are continuing to talk about this and take action; I have heard of moms who are now approaching their local groups and requesting that the Pearl and Fugate books not be sold at homeschooling conventions and church libraries etc.
Luke, I think I would categorize it a little differently. I think that Michael Pearl and his teachings are most definitely patriocentric. Calling yourself the “sovereign” and the redemptive conduit for your family just about sums up patriocentricity. But you are correct that he attempted to distance himself from others as far as grown daughters being allowed to pursue college, etc. He did give more than one issue of No Greater Joy to his concerns about the Botkin type of agenda for girls and even printed negative testimonials from girls who had personally lived in that paradigm. But he is still a patriocentrist in my book.
Secondly, I wasn’t implying that the patriocentrists need to distance themselves from Pearl. I just find it odd that, for all the discussion of this horrible tragedy that is around online the past week or so, the patriocentrists choose to do battle elsewhere over other issues and have said nary a word about this horrible situation. I think it is that some of them encourage their followers to read at least Fugate and to practice “whipping to repentance.” Of course, since they are saying nothing, we can only speculate. (I do know one of these teachers has no issue with face slapping of children.)
Luke, with the platform of having a respected voice in the Christian homeschool community at Sonlight, would you consider speaking out about this?
I must say, I was quite impressed that Timberdoodle took that step:

Very interesting discussion Karen. I had no idea about any of this. I thought it went out in my grandfather’s generation. Clearly, I was wrong.
I am glad that your home schooling community and the main stream media are taking up the plight of these children.
Take care.
